Monthly Archives: October 2012

Just a quick reminder that there will be no Oxford Academy of Dance classes this coming Friday 2nd November at URC because it is half term week.  Other ballet classes (Thursday, Saturday and Monday evening) continue as normal…

There is no 12.00-2.00pm contemporary class this coming Monday 29th October at URC, but  I will be teaching the next two sessions on 5th and 12th November on a theme of exploring balletic principles.  This will be more of a workshop than a conventional ballet class, looking at some of the underlying ideas and aesthetic of classical ballet, providing an opportunity to articulate, question and discuss some of the concepts which often remain unspoken; although we will also go through the class structure and look at how the dance develops.  I do hope that those who are not regular practitioners of ballet may find this useful and of interest.  This is a new venture, and feedback on these classes as an idea and a format will be greatly appreciated.

There will be no class on Monday 19th November because of the DEC Drawing Dance workshop, but the plan is to fit in another batch of classes before Christmas – details to come shortly.

To drinks at the new OVADA (Oxford Visual Arts Development Agency) space yesterday with artists Clare Bassett and Susan Moxley from the DEC group.  This delapidated warehouse offers a high top lit space, full of remnants of an industrial past, with ancillary offices and well worn wooden stairs to a ramshackle gallery.  Currently being used as an artist’s studio, it is drafty and chilly with rough and uneven concrete flooring; but generously sized, full of atmospheric potential, and in a strategically central location.  Just what the arts in Oxford need!  Let’s hope that OVADA, who will start programming in the new year, can hang onto it beyond the five years currently planned…

You can see a panoramic view of the warehouse here:

As they say, watch this space…

With the universities’ autumn term now upon us here is a special offer for those students with some experience wishing to attend regular ballet classes.  A £50 card will entitle the holder to a total of eight intermediate/advanced classes in a specific term.  These can be used at any of the following intermediate/advanced classes: Mondays 5.45-7.15pm, Thursdays 10.00-11.30am or Saturday 11.30am-1.00pm.  You can decide if you want to take up this offer after your first class.

Looking forward to seeing you in class…

Jane East has recently edited a short video promo for Late Work, that I performed in with Jennifer and musicians Malcolm Atkins and Andrew Melvin as part of Jennifer’s mature dancers’ project at the Ivy Arts Centre at Surrey University in Guildford in May.  I am impressed by Jane’s skill in condensing and capturing a flavour of this piece, and hope you enjoy it.  We will be performing the piece again at Roehampton University on Wednesday 21st November – more details to follow soon…
