It is that day of the year when all our extended family make predictions as to what the coming year will hold.  I find these very difficult; much easier to reflect back on 2013 and see what that reveals.  Finding the way forward by looking to the past seems to have been rather a theme in creative work this year… 

Jennifer Jackson and I joined forces once again with deluxe improvising duo of composers Malcolm Atkins and Andrew Melvin to perform Late Work at Donald Hutera’s GoLive festival of new dance and performance in September at the Lion and Unicorn pub in Kentish Town.  The piece reflects on our past as dancers and how we are shaped by ballet’s language and historic repertoire.  This really was ballet in a very small space, but thrilling to be part of this lively and refreshing event and its richly varied programme. Looking forward now to 2014, here is an enjoyable and positive suggestion for a New Year resolution; following on from the inspiring classes run before Christmas by satya devi, a new series of early Monday morning yoga classes at URC with which to start each week is beginning in January:

Begin the New Year with the upcoming Monday morning Shakti flow yoga class
Exhale towards a peaceful heart center with poses that flow with breath and mindfulness.
Classes commence January 13th 2014 at URC, Summertown.
7:30-8:45am   £12 a class or pay what you can.  Please bring a mat.
Beginners welcome and encouraged.

Throughout this term’s series of Skinner Releasing Technique classes with Lizzy le Quesne, Oxford based artist Antonia Bruce has been drawing the dance, capturing the imaginative worlds of participating dancers as they improvise in response to SRT’s very particular conception and guidance of the moving body and persona.  Antonia has kindly allowed me to reproduce some of her beautiful and evocative images, a potent reminder of these sessions, encapsulating moments of watchfulness and spontaneous movement.  She will be exhibiting her work drawing the dance at the Jericho Art Gallery in the spring; watch this space for further details…
