Delighted to welcome back distinguished Oxford based dancer Marina Collard to teach another of her thoughtful and inspiring classes for the Collective Contemporary Class series at URC on Monday 27th October 10.00-11.30pm.
Marina writes: The class begins by allowing time to tune in to the body and the breath. Attention will be paid to the midline leading to finding connection through the whole skeletal system and connective tissue system. In bringing the whole body into a state of awareness, we continue this exploration in moving gradually into complex material. The class has a clear progression, encouraging the dancer to listen to their own sense of weight in the moment of moving and to be playful with their musicality.
Biography: Marina Collard is an independent dance artist and teacher. She has worked for many independent choreographers and companies including Carol Brown Dances, CandoCo and Siobhan Davies Dance Company. Marina is interested in collaborating with artists from different disciplines and has a long-term creative partnership with film maker Tom Paine. She is currently collaborating with photographer Rachel Cherry and writer Gemma Seltzer and recently worked with ceramicist Clare Twomey.
Marina has extensive teaching experience delivering company class and professional class both nationally and internationally. She regularly teaches at London Contemporary Dance School and Trinity Laban where she has also created works for 3rd year touring companies. Marina will be mentoring on a choreographic residency at Gati Dance in Delhi this summer.
A last minute reminder that John Darvell has kindly agreed to give another of his energising and good humoured classes tomorrow Monday 13th October 10.00-11.30am at URC Hall, Banbury Road, Summertown.
Following John, the Collective Contemporary Class series has an exciting line-up of different teachers planned for the coming weeks. On Monday 20th October we are delighted to have secured a single session with Oxford’s very own Cecilia Macfarlane.
Cecilia writes that she is “…continually interested in the uniqueness of each person’s dance, and how this can change all the time.” In this once off session Cecilia will invite the dancers to explore their ‘signature’ moves and to find ways to celebrate these both privately and publicly. A wonderful opportunity to work on this with the immensely experienced Cecilia. And a reminder too that artists are as always welcome to come and draw dancers in these classes.

See you in class!
Delighted to be able to announce that Monday morning contemporary classes will be resuming at URC this coming term. There continues to be a need for professional morning class in Oxford to sustain local dancers, both through practice and through access to other dance artists. So local dancer Rachel Gildea and I are jointly devising a programme under the heading Collective Contemporary Class – to provide regular professional level classes for experienced dancers in Oxford which artists can both attend, and also have the opportunity to teach, sharing their own practice.
CCC classes will run on Monday mornings 10.00-11.30am at the URC in Summertown. The programme will start on Monday September 15th with a series of four classes by John Darvell of nocturn dance. Hugely looking forward to experiencing John’s dynamic and enjoyable teaching – see below for further information. Read More
